I recorded Petey (Guadalupe) Payne and her daughter, Rose Miller a couple of years ago and I just recently was able to recover the audio files. When I posted them, the response was immediate — people love this kind of music and Emily Benoist Ruffin and I got the idea to plan a little bluegrass jam in honor of Jess Payne.
We understand a month is not a lot of time to plan something like this, but Deep August is the best time for something like this, and I figure “why not?”

I am a grandaughter of Jess and Petey Payne, and I would like to say thank you for doing this festival in honor of my grandpa. This means alot to our family!
It is my pleasure to do so. I’ve been looking for a reason to have a little jam here for a long time and since we got part of the backyard mowed, it seemed like the thing to do. I wish I’d had an opportunity to play with Jess. I gave him my card once, and said I’d love to play, but that was right before the gallery closed. I hope you all can come.

I’m one of Jess’s granddaughters living in Illinois now, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for honoring him. It means a lot to me to know people remember his music and his art and that it touched them as much as it touched his family.
I am also one of Jess’ granddaughters and would like to say that this means more than words can express to our family. My mother is Rose Miller and I can’t tell everyone how proud I am of her and my Grandmother! Thanks so very much Melody for doing something so wonderful for our family.
